Cottoning on to Cotton Bollworm. 🐛 Nearly 30 years ago, Australia’s first genetically modified field crop was planted: Bt cotton. Bt cotton works by producing a protein that kills the Cotton Bollworm – one of the crop’s major pests – when it feeds on its leaves. We’ve now identified the specific gene in Cotton Bollworm which gives resistance to a key defensive protein in Bt cotton.
