Daniel K. Inouye served during World War II in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Italy. After the war, he became a lawyer and was active in Hawaiian politics, becoming the state’s first representative to the House and then a U.S. senator. The congressional archival papers of the late Daniel K. Inouye, who served 53 years in Congress, 50 in the U.S. Senate, are now available to the public via the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library Congressional Papers Collection. “I hope that people, including students, will learn about Dan the person, and Dan’s life in public service, so it will inspire others to think about public service as a pathway for them,” said Inouye’s widow Irene.
