After some officials in Texas appeared to blame the NWS for underestimating the rainfall, former Weather Service officials told the New York Times newspaper that the forecasts were as good as they could have been given the huge amounts of rainfall and storm's abrupt escalation.

Hundreds of campers were sound asleep early on Friday, expecting to wake up to a fireworks show and special treats of Hershey’s bars and Coca-Cola by the lake.

Flash flooding is a common occurrence in the Hill Country, but even longtime residents were stunned when the Guadalupe River rose like it did early Friday morning. Ten to 12 inches of rain dumped on Kerr County in a matter of hours, producing more water than the daily flow over Niagara Falls, KSAT in San Antonio reported.

Numerous flood warnings are active in Texas following devastating floods that have killed dozens. The National Weather Service (NWS) has activated several flood warnings across Texas, many of which are expected to last until at least Monday morning.

Vehicles, campers and homes were swept away along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, Texas, as storms caused a flash flood emergency in the area. A flash flood emergency was also declared in San Angelo further north of Texas Hill Country.
